Transgender in America

Spend an hour listening to the radio show “On Point” with Tom Ashbrook talking with transgender Americans about their lives, their reality (first aired August 28, 2013). The discussion features three guests: 1) Deirdre McCloskey, professor of economics, history, english, and communication at the University of Illinois at Chicago. Born Donald McCloskey, she transitioned from male to female in 1995, at the age of 53. Author of “Crossing: A Memoir.” 2) Also, Ryan Sallans, LGBT activist who was born Kimberly Ann Sallans. Ryan transitioned from female to male in 2005, when he was 25. He consults and trains higher education, healthcare agencies and non-profit organizations on LGBTQ issues. Author of “Second Son: Transitioning Toward my Destiny, Love and Life.” 3) Lastly, On Point brings in Andrew Solomon, author and journalist, who writes on politics, culture and psychology. Solomon looks at transgender youth, among other issues, in his latest book, “Far from the Tree:  Parents, Children and the Search for Identity.”
